Groups

Emotion Management Groups
This group helps young men and young women learn and utilize techniques to better manage anger, depression, and other emotions that lead to problems in their daily lives at school, home, and in the community.

Girls Circle
Facilitators of this group help girls develop strategies to manage emotions adaptively and to foster connection, empathy, and trust.  In addition, the group is in an environment where members can build social skills and have opportunities to increase self-esteem.

Boys Council
This is a strengths-based group approach to promote boys’ and young men’s safe, strong and healthy passage through pre-teen and adolescent years.  All boys groups are facilitated by male Family Advocates who have been trained in the Boys Council model.

Young Mother’s Group
This group is offered by Family Centers and provides young women who are pregnant or have recently had a baby, with the opportunity to talk in confidence with other students who have similar experiences.  The supportive group counselor helps young women to build parenting skills, to continue educational and vocational goals and to obtain financial and medical aid.  This service is offered at school in order to meet students in their natural environment and increase access to services.

Young Father’s Group
This group is offered by Family Centers to young men who have recently become fathers.  The group operates from a curriculum called 24:7 Dad and is sponsored by the National Fatherhood Initiative. The program focuses helping young men to enhance fathering skills, learn about the important roles they have with their children and strengthen the relationship with the child’s mother.  The young men have the opportunity to share their experiences in a safe group environment and develop effective strategies for managing their own physical and mental health.

Individual Counseling
Community Mental Health Providers
Professional mental health clinicians work on site with Stamford Academy students who may be experiencing psychological, behavioral, social, emotional and/or family challenges.  Clinicians also engage the student’s family and other important people, including the Family Advocate, in the therapeutic process in order to provide a holistic approach to services.  Access to psychiatric care is available through community agencies when necessary.

Director of Clinical Services
The Director of Clinical Services is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who is stationed at Stamford Academy.  The Director of Clinical Services is available to provide emergency mental health evaluations, crisis intervention, and group therapy for students.  The Director of Clinical Services also engages families, provides consultation and in-service training to school staff and assists Family Advocates in making appropriate action plans for students as well as referrals within the community.

Social Work Intern
Stamford Academy has contracts with Columbia University, New York University and Southern Connecticut State University Schools of Social Work.  Master’s level interns are placed at Stamford Academy three days a week to provide counseling to students as needed.
