Mediation Program/Peer Mediation Training
We started off the school year with a partnership with the Dispute Settlement Center and had all of our Social Service and Discipline staff trained in peacefully mediating conflicts. Our staff continue to work with an expert from the Dispute Settlement Center who is on-site weekly to provide continued training and support. Several students and 2 Family Advocates are working with another professional from the Dispute Settlement to be trained in Peer Mediation. It is our hope that student led mediations will be extremely helpful in helping to resolve conflicts that arise during the school day. The students are required to attend a 15 hour training course. Please see attached for more information.
PeaceWorks
The Teen PeaceWorks Project provides awareness and education about healthy interpersonal relationships and provides opportunities that will help teens develop leadership skills, improve self-esteem and promote social responsibility. February 2-6 is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week. Several students have been involved in activities that will help promote awareness to students and identify resources for help. The students have been involved in doing research on dating violence and exploring the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships. The group has worked on creating posters and ribbons to bring awareness to the Stamford Academy community. Additionally, the student led group has also worked on projects and supplied education to the 8th grade students at Trailblazers Academy. Research shows that teen dating violence is an issue that many students report experiencing. In March, educators from Peace Works, a program of the Domestic Violence Crisis Center, will come and work with our staff and students to educate them about choosing healthy relationships and recognizing warning signs for unhealthy relationships.
