Stamford Academy, the second charter school opened by Domus and Stamford’s second charter school, opened in 2004 for students in grades nine through twelve who struggled in traditional school environments or had dropped out of school. Our students have largely been written off by the community as unwilling or unable to succeed. At Stamford Academy, these young people been proving those naysayers wrong.
Stamford Academy offers an intensive academic program that allows students to catch up on instruction they’ve missed so they are prepared for post-secondary education or training or the skilled workforce upon graduation. Students come to the school performing, on average, four and five grades below level; some are reading as many as eight grades below level. But given the right supportive educational environment, our students are able to focus on their studies and believe in their abilities.
Many of our students have lived with fifteen or eighteen years of hearing that they’ll never amount to anything, that they’ll never make it. It’s a challenge to reverse that mindset, and tougher still to do it while making sure kids are addressing their studies, wearing their uniform correctly, making eye contact while shaking hands, and doing all the other important things we do at Stamford Academy. But the alternative— allowing them to remain in educational environments which don’t meet their needs and thus turn out graduates unprepared for their futures—is unacceptable.
