The Reading Specialist Team works to promote literacy for all Stamford Academy students and staff members. The reading teachers utilize a variety of resource tools, such as Read 180, for teaching literacy-based skills. Read 180 is a comprehensive reading program which incorporates computer-based activities with whole group, small group and independent instruction. The program teaches and reinforces such reading and writing skills as word recognition, reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary development, spelling, and expressive writing. The teachers support students in answering the question “How can improving my literacy help me in the real world?” The reading teachers use the CAPT, NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association), and QRI (Qualitative Reading Inventory) to track student progress. The Reading Specialist Team also works closely with subject area teachers on co-teaching assignments as well as incorporating literacy based strategies into their instruction. Overall, the Reading Specialist Program works to provide students with the skills needed to learn to enjoy reading for both pleasure and future educational and vocational experiences.
The Special Education program provides services to students with disabilities as well as to all students through the Co-Teaching program. Co-Teachers push into classes on a daily basis to provides services as specified on a student's IEP as well as to support the learning of all students in the classroom. Students of all levels are able to come to the COTE Room to receive additional academic support.
