9th Grade Contemporary Young Adult Literature

This English Language Arts course will serve to guide students in answering essential questions about themselves and the world around them. Students will explore the question “Who Am I?” through the use of novels, non-fiction texts, plays and films. The class will have a focus on young adult literature, allowing the students to explore their world and essential questions such as, “How do the choices I make affect my life and the lives of others around me?” and “How does my self-image affect who I will become?” Topics of study for 9th grade students will include image, respect and family. The curriculum is heavily focused on literacy skills and is designed to teach the necessary skills to be successful on the CAPT, post-secondary opportunities, and beyond.  

10th Grade Modern World Literature

In the tenth grade students will explore the guiding question “Who Are We?” The class will have a focus on modern world literature, allowing the students to explore their world and essential questions such as, “How does our society shape who I am as a person?” and “How does conflict reveal who we are as people?” Topics of study will include conflict, appearance vs. reality, and power. There will be a strong writing component to the course that will let students express themselves creatively while focusing on the necessary skills they will need going forward in their schooling. Students focus on learning literacy based skills and will receive rigorous instruction that will help them be successful on the CAPT and their ongoing education.

11th Grade American Literature

This course explores the literary conventions, themes, and techniques employed by American authors in a variety of genres such as the short story, poetry, and the novel. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of concurrent themes throughout American literature as well as the examination of how literature is reflective of the time in which it is written. Students refine critical thinking, reading and writing skills through literary analysis of a broad range of representative works. Throughout the year the students continually re-define American identity and the American dream and how it has changed throughout history. Their guiding question, Who are they?, guides them to explore how the powerful and the powerless in American history and literature have impacted literature.

12th Grade Senior English

This course explores global leadership through reading, listening, and viewing a variety of interactive texts. Students display their understanding of humanitarianism and business leadership through writing, speaking, and presenting. All students demonstrate an independent command of literacy and language through comprehension, application, analysis, evaluation, and extension of college-level texts. The skills they gain prepare them to be successful in their post-secondary endeavors. Through the exploration and analysis of the twelfth grade guiding question, What will I do?, the students are able to explore and analyze their personal leadership at a humanitarian, business, and global level
