This course focuses on the foundations of civilization from prehistoric times through the end of the Middle Ages. While learning about the achievements and important events of the past, students will evaluate the roles geography and religion played in shaping today’s world. 11th Grade American History

Students will study U.S. History from the Revolutionary War to the present day by examining the big “Difference Makers” in each era. The course will focus on the impact of the most influential and the most marginalized people in our nation’s history. Students will work on many skills, mostly centered on the ability to read historical texts, interpret them for meaning, and produce their own written work on the same topics. At the end of each unit students will be able to evaluate America’s successes and failures concerning the ideals of the founders and by the end of the course be able to speak and write knowledgably about the current state of the country by comparing our present to our past. We also plan to make a service-oriented field trip to Washington, D.C. this spring.

12th Grade Civics and Contemporary Issues

During the first semester, this course will survey the structure and function of the American government, criminal justice, and economic systems. During the second semester, students will analyze America’s place in the world by studying today’s most pressing international conflicts. Students will apply knowledge gained throughout the year to determine what it means to think globally and to be a citizen of the world. Students will become proficient in reading and analyzing primary and secondary texts, political cartoons, charts, graphs, and images. Students will be able to use evidence gained from a variety of sources to draw conclusions about current event issues and then be able to speak and write persuasively on these topics
