9th Grade Physical Science

In this course, students will explore the question “How can I apply scientific skills and processes to solve problems?” This course takes a hands-on, inquiry-based approach to the science of matter, atomic structure, chemical bonding, acids and bases, carbon chemistry, energy, electricity, and magnetism. Class work will be aimed at strengthening students’ scientific skills and knowledge of the scientific process and content. Each unit students will complete lab and project work designed to help students develop the critical thinking skills necessary to collect and process data. Communicating effectively on the topic of science will be focused on through written lab reports and oral data presentations. As the culminating task in their science portfolios, students will be responsible for completing a science fair project, in which they will pose a scientific question that they will design an experiment to investigate, collecting and analyzing their own data and drawing conclusions. Each student will present on their projects both in poster format as well as orally.

10th Grade Biology

“How can we apply scientific skills and process to solve problems?” This course looks to answer that question by providing a hands-on, inquiry-based approach to the science of genetics, genetics, cellular biology, ecology, and the global spread of disease and evolution. Each unit students will complete lab work allowing them to access biology content and practice the critical thinking skills necessary to research and process data in order to effectively problem solve. Communicating effectively on the topic of science will be focused on through written lab reports and oral data presentations. Class work will be aimed at giving students the opportunity to practice both literacy and math skills needed for the CAPT. As the culminating task in their science portfolios, students will be responsible for completing a science fair project, in which they will pose a scientific question that they will design an experiment to investigate, collecting and analyzing their own data and drawing conclusions. Each student will present on their projects both in poster format as well as orally.

11th Grade Chemistry

This is an inquiry-based course designed around real-life applications of Chemistry and how science can be used to enhance society. We begin the year by exploring how the scientific process and critical decision-making skills can be powerful tools in real world situations. Students will go on to investigate the nature of atoms and elements, the periodic table, and ultimately chemical reactions and biochemistry. Each unit of study will culminate with a student-lead investigation, leading up to the school wide science fair in which each student will design, conduct, and present an original experiment.

12th Grade Physics

In this inquiry-based course, students will focus on real-world applications of science as they explore how Physics can be used to solve engineering problems. Students will research and carry out a variety of experiments as they study linear motion, forces, heat, and energy. The course will culminate with the school-wide science fair, where Physics students will design, conduct, and present their own investigations.
